Sue Robbins - Open Scholarship

I'm Sue Robbins. I've worked in Higher Education since 1989 and have a wide range of teaching experience. I have designed and taught initial and in-service teacher education programmes for English Language Teachers; designed and taught courses and modules in English language, English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes (English for Educators, Business English) and academic literacy at foundation, under- and post-graduate levels; run teacher education programmes and convened large modules taken by up to 820 students annually; and written English for Business examination papers for the Royal Society of Arts. I have experience of quality assurance, having acted as an external examiner for University of Chichester, UK, and been an examiner for the B2 First exam (formerly Cambridge First Certificate in English) and London Chamber of Commerce & Industry English for Business exams.

I have published four textbooks for English language learners (close to a million copies sold worldwide) as well as a learning object The Academic Writing Guide. My latest textbook, Develop Your English: with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, was published in January 2024 with University of Sussex Open Press. It is a free-to-access upper intermediate-advanced level (B2-C1) e-textbook for English language learners. Develop Your English represents a departure from most published English language material in that it incorporates a global perspective into the language learning process with a focus on developing sustainability literacy and global citizenship, encouraging students to formulate and articulate their responses to global challenges. It also features texts written by academics from a diversity of backgrounds offering a range of perspectives, and features a variety of accents in the podcasts from people using English as an International Language. You can access your free copy of the book via the link in the main menu.
